ACG’s AI Use Policy
The following is ACG’s official AI policy, as adopted on August 14, 2024.
Editorial & Content Permissions
Generative AI is generally permitted for the following purposes:
- Research – AI may be used in research, but all facts and sources must be independently verified by a human. Be aware of inaccuracies and biases in AI output.
- Brainstorming & experimentation – Using AI for brainstorming is acceptable, but AI-generated content should not be copied directly into a final product.
- Searching & assembling data – AI can be used to find or analyze data, but all results must be independently verified by a human.
- Revision – AI-powered tools can be used for minor review and revision of written content, but a human reviewer should always proofread content and verify that any changes made by AI are accurate in the context of the piece.
Generative AI is NOT permitted for:
- Verbatim content creation – Content generated by AI tools should not be shared or published verbatim. All AI-generated content must undergo editing and review by a human, with specific attention paid to accuracy and voice.
- Private information – No personal or private information related to ACG or its members should be entered into AI programs (see policy below).
- Intellectual property – No intellectual property belonging to ACG, a ACG member, or an associated party should be entered into AI programs unless express permission is given (see policy below).
AI Use Disclosure
All content submitted to ACG for publication should disclose any use of AI in content generation. It is not necessary to disclose the use of AI for brainstorming or revising, but disclosure should be made if any significant amount of AI-generated content is included in the finished product.
Copyright, Ownership, and AI Training
Human authorship is required for copyright protection; therefore, content that is exclusively or primarily generated by AI is not copyrightable. For this reason, any content published by ACG or on behalf of ACG and subject to copyright must be authored by a human. AI contribution should be de minimis (small or insignificant enough as to not impact the copyrightability of the work).
ACG will not reproduce and/or otherwise use employees’ or members’ work, proprietary information, private data, or other contributions in any manner for the purpose of training artificial intelligence technologies to generate content, unless ACG obtains specific and express permission from the author(s) to do so. This includes uploading any confidential information into open AI models when brainstorming, assembling, or revising content. In addition, this policy prohibits the use of any work belonging to ACG in training AI models. This includes uploading any portion of a ACG publication or proprietary information into AI tools.
Note: Artificial intelligence is changing rapidly, so policies surrounding AI use are subject to change as well. This policy will be reviewed regularly and adapted as needed by ACG staff.
